Siddhartha is his own Shadow. Throughout his journey, he is at odds with his materialistic qualities and desires. He constantly tries to suppress, reject, and purge these qualities during his journey. They begin to define him when temptation is great, such as his sexual relationship with Kamala, though he manages to reject these qualities and get back on track with his journey for enlightenment. No other character in the text actively tries to prevent Siddhartha from achieving his goals except himself.
