In the Road Back, the Hero recommits to the journey. This decision may be an internal one, made by the Hero, or an event.
At this stage, Siddhartha recommits to his goal: to rid himself of Self, and to obtain enlightenment. While acquiring knowledge at the river, "something in him had died, something that he had long desired should perish.... ...His Self."1 His Self, and identity view, have vanquished, allowing him to reach a goal he had since the beginning of his journey when he was an ascetic. Siddhartha is now clearly back on track in terms of his journey.
Siddhartha destroyed his identity view, his ascetic rituals, sensual desire, ill will, restlessness, ignorance, and conceit, though his doubt in Buddha himself is still there, as does not follow the Illustrious one. It is likely Siddhartha is a non-returner at this point.
