Siddhartha is the Selfless Hero

Siddhartha is the protagonist of Siddhartha. His primary purpose is to "separate from the ordinary world and sacrifice himself for the service of the journey at hand."2 He answers the challenge, his restlessness and need for personal growth, and completes the quest, reaches enlightenment, by leaving the materialistic Ordinary World into the spiritual Special World. The audience is able to relate to his traits, such as his restlessness in the beginning of his journey, vices, his inability to keep away from material wealth with Kamala and Kamaswami, and wants to emulate his admirable qualities, such as the lack of material desires. Out of all the characters in Siddhartha, Siddhartha grows the most, and his growth is the most obvious as the audience sees the events of the Hero's Journey through him.
