In the beginning of his journey, Siddhartha challenges the Ordinary traits he possesses, and announces his desire to change his materialistic ways. His desire to change is what causes the Hero's Journey to begin in the first place.
Kamala and Kamaswami challenge Siddhartha's commitment to his journey, as they tempt him with material, the very thing he is trying to avoid getting attached to. Their challenge contributes to the eventual Ordeal Siddhartha must face.
Siddhartha's son also challenges Siddhartha's commitment to his journey. When Siddhartha's son runs away, Siddhartha must decide whether or not he should chase after him, and try to help him understand the Special World, especially since his son is his own blood, or continue his quest for enlightenment and Nirvana. He must let his son be free just like his own father let him free to begin his quest for enlightenment.
